Tesla is recalling close to 4,000 of its Cybertrucks over a problem with the vehicle's accelerator pedal, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) documents.

Why it matters: It's the latest setback for Tesla, which is cutting 10% of its workforce amid declining sales.

Driving the news: The recalled Cybertrucks have an accelerator pedal that can dislodge and get trapped, causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally and "increase the risk of a collision," according to an NHTSA notice.

  • "An unapproved change introduced lubricant (soap) to aid in the component assembly of the pad onto the accelerator pedal. Residual lubricant reduced the retention of the pad to the pedal," per the notice.
  • The recall affects 3,878 Cybertrucks manufactured between Nov. 13, 2023 and April 4.
  • Tesla voluntarily decided to recall the affected vehicles last week, and will "replace or rework the accelerator pedal" free of charge for all impacted customers.
  • As of April 15, "Tesla is not aware of any collisions, injuries or deaths relating to this condition," the notice stated.

Zoom out: Tesla rolled out the new vehicle late last year amid production challenges.

  • Issues with the Cybertruck's accelerator pedal began to surface over the past few weeks, per Tech Crunch.
  • Tesla did not immediately respond on Friday to Axios' request for comment.
