Meta platforms including Facebook and Instagram are back online after a "technical issue" caused a widespread outage earlier in the day.

The big picture: Self-reported outages on both platforms surged after 10 am ET Tuesday, reaching more than 583,000 reports on Facebook alone, according to the tracking site Downdetector.

  • More than 92,000 outages were reported on Instagram just past 10:30 am ET, per Downdetector.

Driving the news: "Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services," Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote on X.

  • Stone added that the issue had been resolved "as quickly as possible." Earlier Tuesday he had acknowledged on X that people were "having trouble accessing our services."
  • Some users also reported being logged out of their Facebook accounts. Meta acknowledged on its Facebook Login Status page that the platform was experiencing "major disruptions."
  • The outage also impacted Threads and Facebook Messenger.

State of play: "At this time, we are not aware of any specific election nexus nor any specific malicious cyber activity nexus to the outage, but we are aware of the incident and the global scope of it," a senior Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) official told Axios' Sam Sabin.

  • The outage occurred on Super Tuesday when over a dozen states head to the polls for presidential primaries.
  • Downdetector indicated that the reports concerning Instagram and Facebook were coming from across the country, rather than a localized region.

Zoom out: Meta suffered a similar widespread outage in 2021 that lasted hours, which the company later said was caused by a routine maintenance error.

  • Elon Musk appeared to weigh in on the outage Tuesday, posting on X that "if you're reading this post, it's because our servers are working."
