Nikki Haley wins D.C. Republican primary, her first in nominating contest against Trump
Presidential candidate Nikki Haley won her first GOP presidential nominating contest on Sunday, the D.C. Republican Party announced.
Why it matters: "This makes Nikki Haley the first woman to win a Republican primary in U.S. history," noted Haley campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas in a post to X.

The big picture: While Haley's win in Washington, D.C., doesn't affect the trajectory of the race that former President Trump has dominated, it's a welcome boost for the ex-UN ambassador ahead of this week's Super Tuesday contests.
- Despite Haley's Republican primary losses before Sunday's victory, she has defied calls from some in the GOP to suspend her underdog campaign and has vowed to stay in the race.
What they're saying: "We know how the Trump campaign will respond to this ("swamp swamp swamp"), but a whole lot of people who worked for Trump — who know him and his administration best — rejected him," said veteran Republican strategist Doug Heye in a post to X.
- Haley picked up on Heye's point in posts to her social media accounts, saying: "Republicans closest to Washington's dysfunction know that Donald Trump has brought nothing but chaos and division for the past 8 years. It's time to start winning again and move our nation forward!"
The other side: The Trump campaign said in an emailed statement that the former South Carolina governor "has been soundly rejected throughout the rest of America," but was "just crowned Queen of the Swamp by the lobbyists and DC insiders."
