Former President Trump said Friday that he supports in vitro fertilization and called on the Alabama legislature to "act quickly to find an immediate solution to preserve" the availability of IVF in the state.

Why it matters: The 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner had not yet weighed in on the Alabama Supreme Court ruling restricting access to the fertility treatment, as his party has faced blowback over the decision.

  • The party's handling of reproductive issues has become a weak spot and Democrats rushed to blame the GOP and Trump's conservative-appointed justices that overturned Roe v. Wade for the Alabama decision, which has already had a restrictive impact on fertility clinics in the state.

Driving the news: "I strongly support the availability of IVF for couples who are trying to have a precious baby," Trump wrote on his Truth Social on Friday.

  • "Under my leadership, the Republican Party will always support the creation of strong, thriving, healthy American families. We want to make it easier for mothers and fathers to have babies, not harder!"

Zoom out: The National Republican Senatorial Committee sent out a memo earlier Friday urging candidates to "clearly and concisely reject efforts by the government to restrict IVF."

  • Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is also considering drafting a resolution to respond to the ruling, Axios' Andrew Solender reported.

State of play: Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who is trailing Trump in the GOP presidential race, said earlier in the week that she agreed that "embryos, to me, are babies," but that she disagrees with the Alabama decision.
