Caitlin Clark broke the NCAA women's basketball all-time scoring record on Thursday as she led Iowa to a 106-89 win over Michigan.

The big picture: The West Des Moines native made the record-breaking three-pointer in the first quarter, topping the record of former Washington star Kelsey Plum's 3,527 career points.

By the numbers: Clark finished the game with a career high 49 points — setting a new Iowa program record.

• She is the first Division I player to surpass 3,000 points, 1,000 assists and 800 rebounds, the NCAA said.

What we're watching: The Hawkeyes player, who is averaging more than 32 points per game, is within reach of Pete Maravich's 3,667 career points — the men's record set five decades ago.

Of note: The video board broadcast congratulatory messages from friends and family at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

• "I started crying watching that video just because I'm filled with so much gratitude and love," Clark said in an interview after the game. "The way these fans support women's basketball is so special."

Meanwhile, the Big Ten Network posted a video online featuring congratulatory messages to Clark from fellow sports greats, including Tom Brady.
