SPOKANE, Wash.-- El Niño is in control in February 2024, but La Niña is coming. The NOAA Climate Prediction Center released their newest forecast for ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) on Tuesday, and the results have big implications for later this year. The CPC gives an 80% chance this spring to transition to Neutral conditions and a 75% chance of La Niña by the end of summer and early fall. NOAA says a strong El Niño switches almost immediately to a La Niña 60% of the time. The winter of 2023-2024 remains a great example of El Niño at work. It's been wet, but not snowy. There's been far more mild winter days than cold ones. It's also the 5th strongest El Niño since records began in 1950. A low snowpack this spring because of these conditions will likely lead to more drought, low water conditions, and a long dusty summer up in the mountains. La Niña stacks the deck for the opposite from El Niño; more cold and more snow during the winter months. Skiing conditions and water supplies would be looking a lot better for 2025 if La Niña were to show up to end 2024. There's still three to five months where things could change, but by summertime we should be highly confident as to what path we're on for next winter. ►Subscribe: https://www.youtube.com/4NewsNow ►Website: http://www.kxly.com ►Twitter: https://twitter.com/kxly4news ►Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KXLY4News
