Authorities have started releasing toxic chemicals into the air from five derailed tanker cars that had been in danger of exploding Monday near the Ohio-Pennsylvania state. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered evacuations in the area and had warned residents a few hours before the controlled released to leave immediately or face the possibility of death. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency says the release began Monday around 4:30 p.m., about an hour later than first expected. Authorities believe most, if not all, residents in the danger zone left before the warning was issued but they were knocking on doors one more time before releasing the vinyl chloride inside the cars that derailed Friday night. A Norfolk Southern Railway official said doing the release during the daytime will allow the fumes to disperse more quickly and prevent the rail cars from exploding and sending shrapnel flying. The derailment site in Ohio village of East Palestine is in an industrial area. The evacuation area extends into a sparsely populated area of Pennsylvania.
