CCTV footage captures the moment when a pedestrian bridge packed with people celebrating the Diwali holiday Sunday in western India collapses into the river below, killing at least 137 people. The footage shows the structure in Gujarat state swaying — with a few people apparently deliberately rocking it — before suddenly giving way. Authorities said nearly 500 people were celebrating the last day of the Diwali festival on and around the nearly 150-year-old suspension bridge in Morbi when supporting cables snapped after dark. Authorities in India say they have arrested nine people in connection with the bridge collapse. According to police, those arrested include managerial staff at the company that operated the bridge, which had recently undergone renovations. Police say more people are likely to be arrested. Local media reports said Monday that the nearly 150-year-old bridge over the Machchu river reopened five days ago after undergoing seven months of repair work by a private company. The reports said the Morbi city bridge had not, however, received the local government's fitness or safety certificate. U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement Monday that he and his wife, Jill, "send our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the bridge collapse and join the people of Gujarat in mourning the loss of too many lives cut short." https://www.voanews.com/a/at-least-132-die-in-india-bridge-collapse/6812454.html » Subscribe to VOA News: https://bit.ly/3KIPysi » Watch more VOA News video: https://www.youtube.com/c/VOANews Voice of America (VOA) is the largest U.S. international broadcaster, providing news and information in more than 40 languages to an estimated weekly audience of 236.8 million people.
