SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson: "First of all, Taiwan is part of China. It's not an independent state and has no so-called president. The root cause of the current tensions in the Taiwan Strait is that the DPP (ruling Democratic Progressive Party) authorities  have clung to Taiwan independence and colluded with external forces to make provocations. This seriously undermines the important foundation for peaceful development of cross-strait relations." 4. Journalists 5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson: "The one-China principle is the anchor for maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Only by sticking to the one-China principle, can cross-strait relations improve and develop, and any deviation from the principle will lead to tension and turmoil in the relations. The Taiwan issue bears on Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. We are ready to create a wide space for peaceful reunification but will never leave any room for secessionist activities of Taiwan independence." 6. Wide of news conference STORYLINE: China's Foreign Ministry on Monday once again warned that deviation from the one-China principle would cause "tension and turmoil" in the Taiwan Strait. The comments from spokesperson Mao Ning came as Taiwan celebrated its National Day. Speaking at the celebrations, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said China's threats of military action against Taiwan were "not an option" and will only push the two countries further apart. Tsai said China should not mistake competition within Taiwan's multiparty democratic political system for weakness and try to divide Taiwanese society. In response, Mao reiterated China's long-held stance that "Taiwan is .... not an independent state and has no so-called president." "The root cause of the current tensions in the Taiwan Strait is that the DPP (ruling Democratic Progressive Party) authorities have been clinging to Taiwan independence and colluding with external forces to make provocations," she told reporters at a daily briefing. "We are ready to create a wide space for peaceful reunification, but will never leave any room for secessionist activities of Taiwan independence." During her speech, President Tsai also emphasized Taiwan's boosted efforts to protect itself from China's threat, both with increased imports of foreign hardware and the revitalization of the domestic arms industry and upgraded training for reserves. Russia's war on Ukraine has refocused attention on China and methods by which Taiwan can resist a much larger and more powerful state equipped with the world's largest standing army and a huge arsenal of missiles. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
