Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Indian concerns over his invasion of Ukraine as he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a day after he told his Chinese counterpart he understood Beijing’s worries about the war. Speaking at the opening of talks Friday in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Modi told Putin that “today’s era is not one for war,” according to footage shown on Indian public broadcaster Doordashan. The two were attending a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a Chinese-led group seen as a counter to US-dominated alliances. The Indian leader spoke after Putin, who acknowledged tension over the issue. “I know your stance on the conflict in Ukraine and the concerns you constantly express,” Putin said. “We’ll do everything to end this as soon as possible.” Though it was he who ordered his troops into his neighbor’s territory in February, Putin told Modi he was committed to ending the fighting and accused the Ukrainian leadership of not wanting to negotiate a peace deal. Kyiv has said it’s willing to talk only after Russia pulls its troops back to pre-invasion positions. While China has provided Russia with diplomatic support since the war began and accused the US of provoking Putin into action by pushing to expand NATO, Beijing has avoided military support or any violation of US sanctions. India, which relies on Russia as an energy and arms supplier, has tried to balance those ties as it comes under increasing US pressure to limit its ties with Russia.
