Tropical Storm Fiona changed little overnight Wednesday night into Thursday morning despite battling some wind shear and dry air. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, the National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm Fiona currently has maximum sustained winds of 50 mph as it continues to move west at 14 mph. Fiona is about 545 miles from the Leeward Islands of the northeastern Caribbean. The NHC has issued tropical storm watches for portions of the northern Leeward Islands, but more Tropical Storm Watches are expected for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico later today. Fiona is forecast to strengthen slightly as it approaches the Caribbean over the next day or so but the presence of wind sheer, dry air and eventually interaction with land will limit significant strengthening.
