Carolyn Deakins, a former friend of Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz's biological mother, testified during the 23-year-old's sentencing for killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in South Florida. Deakins testified about doing drugs with Cruz's mother, Brenda Woodard, and the time when Woodard told her she was pregnant with Cruz. Deakins said Woodard had always planned to give the baby up for adoption. After describing how Woodard didn't want the baby, Deakins apologized to Cruz, saying "I'm sorry Nikolas but that's just the way it was."
