Pope Francis landed in Edmonton on Sunday on a "penitential journey" to apologize to Canada's indigenous people for the abuse of children in residential schools for a period stretching from the 19th to mid-20th century. The 85-year-old pontiff, who has struggled with a bad knee and has trouble walking, was lowered from the plane in a crate elevator and pushed in a wheelchair to the welcome ceremony. He was met on the tarmac by Canada's first Indigenous governor-general, Mary Simon, an Inuk, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The pope left the airport for St. Joseph's Seminary in Edmonton where he was expected to rest throughout the afternoon following his 10-hour flight.
