European Commission President Urusla von der Leyen on Thursday said she was confident that Ukraine and Moldova would both do the "homework" necessary to move onto the next stage of joining the EU, after leaders of the bloc approved their candidacy. "I am convinced that they will all move as swiftly as possible and work as hard as possible to implement the necessary reforms," she said. The European Union agreed Thursday to put Ukraine on a path toward EU membership, acting with uncharacteristic speed and unity to pull the embattled country further away from Russia’s influence and bind it more closely to the West. Meeting at a summit in Brussels, leaders of the EU’s 27 nations mustered the required unanimous approval to grant Ukraine candidate status. That sets in motion a membership process that could take years or even decades. The EU also granted candidate status to Moldova, but stopped short of granting Georgia the status, saying that the country needed to "deliver on a few reforms that are important and to show political unity, to engage the civil society and to move forward". "And then the next steps are within reach," she added.
