Celebrations not seen since before the pandemic are set for this weekend as Central Alabama commemorates Juneteenth, the day recognized as Emancipation Day for all enslaved African Americans. The now federally recognized holiday provides all of us the opportunity to spend time understanding and supporting African American history, culture, and progress. The Steele City Jazz Festival has returned to Birmingham this weekend, as has the Juneteenth parade Saturday, and Sunday morning’s prayer service at Kelly Ingram Park. On Sunday at 7pm, tune in to WVTM 13 for a special Matter of Fact: Trailblazers Troublemakers and Dreams as we explore new perspectives on fundamental race relations and equality problems still facing our nation. It took over two years for the news of the emancipation proclamation to reach all those who were enslaved. This is the second year we are recognizing Juneteenth as a national holiday.
