The Atlantic hurricane season doesn't begin officially start until June 1st and there's already an area highlighted in the SW Gulf and Yucatan Peninsula for a medium chance of tropical development. The chance is now medium, but it may continue to go up in the upcoming days. The reason for this is because Hurricane Agatha has formed in the Eastern Pacific and it's high-end category 2 hurricane. Remember, the Eastern Pacific has a different list of names than what we use on the Atlantic side. Agatha is forecast to become a major hurricane tonight/early Monday morning then making landfall Monday night then move into southern Mexico early next week. Some of the energy from Agatha could move into the SW Gulf. If this happens it would be later this week. Right now, it looks like anything that does try to reorganize would move northeast toward the Florida area. On Tuesday, May 24, NOAA released its outlook for the 2022 season. They predicted it will be the seventh above-average Atlantic season in a row with 14-21 named storms of which six to ten would become hurricanes. They predicted three to six of those hurricanes would become major, meaning Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
