Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shed a light on the human cost of the battle raging in Donbas, eastern Ukraine. "Today, from 50 up to 100 people may die in the most difficult direction, in the east of our state," he said during a news conference with Poland's President Andrzej Duda on Sunday. Poland's leader traveled to Kyiv to support the country's European Union aspirations, becoming the first foreign leader to address the Ukrainian parliament since the start of the war. Russian and Ukrainian forces battled along a 342-mile (551-kilometer) wedge of the country's eastern industrial heartland on Sunday. Russia launched artillery and missile attacks in the region, known as the Donbas, seeking to expand the territory that Moscow-backed separatists have held since 2014. To bolster its defenses, Ukraine’s parliament on Sunday voted to extend martial law and the mobilization of armed forces for a third time, until August 23. Getting a full picture of the battle in the east has been difficult because airstrikes and artillery barrages have made it extremely dangerous for reporters to move around. Both Ukraine and the Moscow-backed rebels fighting in the east also have introduced tight restrictions on reporting from the combat zone.
