Medication abortion, which is commonly referred to as the "abortion pill," could help some women go around abortion restrictions but it depends on where they live. Last December, the Food and Drug Administration said it would permanently allow patients to receive abortion pills by mail. The pills are approved to terminate pregnancies up to 70 days and involve women taking a combination of two medications. During the pandemic, abortion pills became more available as telehealth expanded, but several GOP-led states have already taken steps to ban access to abortion medication through telehealth services. As part of the recommendations from the California Future of Abortion Council, they're addressing medication abortions. The group says California should address limitations for these types of abortions through the Medi-Cal program.
