Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday handed over a completed European Union (EU) questionnaire on its application for membership to the bloc, to the EU envoy in Kyiv. Zelenskyy formally submitted the questionnaire, in two heavy volumes, to the EU's Ambassador to Ukraine, Matti Maasikas, and said it was the first step in his campaign to obtain accelerated membership to the EU. The questionnaire was delivered to Zelenskyy in early April by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during her first visit to Kyiv since the war started. She said a decision on whether Ukraine would be considered a candidate could come within weeks. Ukraine's drive to join the bloc has been a provocative issue with Russia for years. "It's the aspiration our people are moving towards and fighting for," Zelenskyy said at the submission ceremony. "We also believe that it will have positive outcome, first of all, for the history of our people," he added.
