Speaking in Russian at the start of his address, U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson appealed directly to Russian citizens on Tuesday and urged them to bypass state media to learn "the truth" about the war in Ukraine. Johnson said "the Russian people deserve the truth, you deserve the facts." Johnson spoke of the grisly images that appeared to show dead Ukrainian civilians in the streets after Russian troops pulled back from Kyiv. "It's no wonder your government is seeking to hide them from you," he said. Last month Russian President Vladimir Putin intensified a crackdown on media outlets and individuals who fail to hew to the Kremlin line on Russia's war in Ukraine, blocking Facebook and Twitter and signing into law a bill that criminalizes the intentional spreading of what Moscow deems to be "fake" reports. Johnson urged Russians to use VPN connections to access "independent information" about the war. "And when you find the truth, share it," he said.
