The Ukrainian Army posted video on April 5 that they said showed damaged buildings, vehicles and roadways in towns west of Kyiv, following the Russian withdrawal from the area. According to the Ukrainian army, the first part of the footage shows Makariv followed by video of largescale damage to parts of Borodyanka. Both towns are located around 25 miles from the Ukrainian capital. Borodyanka and Makariv were both bombarded by Russian forces in March as they pushed toward Kyiv. In early April, Ukraine said they had retaken control of multiple areas in Kyiv oblast, including Borodyanka as Russia withdrew. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on April 4 that atrocities carried out against civilians in other liberated towns such as Makariv and Borodyanka may be worse than those documented in Bucha, another Kyiv satellite town, after the Russian withdrawal.
