96-year-old Holocaust survivor Boris Romanchenko was killed when his home in Kharkiv was attacked, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. He survived several Nazi camps during World War II "but he was killed by a Russian projectile." The Ukrainian leader also said Russian forces had struck Ukraine's northern Zhytomyr region on Monday and that a Russian jet had been shot down in Kharkiv region. He added that a convoy of civilians had been shelled in Zaporizhzhia region, resulting in the hospitalization of four children. Zelenskiy said that so many Russian jets and helicopters had been shot down by Ukrainian forces that "we can only state their pilots' heads are a vacuum, instead of containing brains." U.S. President Joe Biden said Russia’s use of a hypersonic missile against Ukraine was a sign President Vladimir Putin is growing desperate, and warned about new indications of possible cyberattacks. Ukraine would hold a referendum on the terms of any peace agreement with Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said. The invasion has driven 10 million people -- nearly a quarter of Ukraine’s population -- from their homes, according to the United Nations. About 3.4 million have fled to other countries such as Poland. European Union leaders are debating a ban on buying Russian oil, while signaling it’s unlikely to be adopted this week amid divisions within the bloc. The Kremlin warned that such measures would “hit everyone,” especially Europeans.
