Romania is seeing an influx of refugees from Ukraine as Russian troops bore down on Kyiv on Friday, with gunfire and explosions resonating ever closer to the government quarter, The invasion of the democratic country has fueled fears of wider war in Europe and triggered worldwide efforts to make Russia stop. Interior minister Lucian Bode said Friday that in the last 24 hours, 10,624 Ukrainians have entered Romania, with 3,660 of them moving on to other countries, and that just 11 have requested political asylum. Romania's border police reported Thursday an inflow increase of 120% compared to the same time interval of the previous day. Romanian rescue services have set up some tents, and humanitarian organisations are welcoming Ukrainians, giving them food and water. Most of the refugees coming into Romania have some family within the European Union, and intend to stay with them until the invasion is over. Amid growing casualties from the deadly warfare - including shelling that sliced through the facade of a Kyiv apartment building, bridges and schools - the Kremlin said Russia was ready to talk with Ukrainian officials.
