New York City has given its roughly 148,000 public school employees until 5 p.m. Friday, October 1, to get at least their first COVID-19 vaccine shot or face suspension without pay when schools open on Monday. One of the teachers who has declined to be vaccinated is Roxanne Rizzi, an elementary school teacher at P.S. 206 The Horace Harding School in Queens. Rizzi says she had COVID-19 previously and now has antibodies and so does not need a vaccine. "We're not entitled to unemployment and we can't work anywhere else," said Rizzi. "I liken it to psychological warfare." On Friday, she considered getting the vaccine shot to return to classrooms next week and continue collecting paychecks. But Rizzi says she will "never stop fighting" on behalf of co-workers who don't want the shot. A group of teachers, including Rizzi, asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday for an emergency injunction blocking the city's public school vaccine mandate. An earlier challenge to the vaccine mandate in court was not successful. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he is confident courts will uphold legal challenges to the city's efforts to exclude unvaccinated staff from school buildings, where they might infect co-workers or children too young to get the shots.
