Kamala Harris called depictions of border patrol agents using horse reins to forcibly move Haitian immigrants trying to cross America's southern border "horrible," and said she supports an investigation of how federal border agents are dealing with the situation. The vice president's remarks come after DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas and U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz said they would look into agents on horseback using what appeared to be whips and their horses to push back migrants at the river between Acuña and Del Rio, Texas. The city is roughly 145 miles west of San Antonio where thousands of migrants remain camped around a bridge. "I'm deeply troubled about it," Harris said in Washington Tuesday. "And I'll also be talking with secretary Mayorkas today about it." More than 6,000 Haitians and other migrant were removed from the encampment U.S. officials said Monday as they defended a strong response that included immediately expelling migrants to Haiti. On Monday, Mayorkas conceded it was a “challenging and heartbreaking situation,” but he issued a stark warning: “If you come to the United States illegally, you will be returned. Your journey will not succeed, and you will be endangering your life and your family’s life.” The Biden administration has been ramping up expulsion flights to Haiti and plans expand the effort to seven flights a day in what may be the swiftest, large-scale American efforts to remove migrants or refugees in decades Mexico has also began busing some of the migrants away from the border.
