Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said there was no major damage following a 7-magnitude earthquake that struck near the Pacific resort city of Acapulco on Tuesday night, Authorities have reported one death, a man who was on his motorcycle. The death occurred in nearby Coyuca de Benitez, in the Mexican state of Guerrero. "The fact that the alarm rang helped. It worked. This must be highlighted, recognized," López Obrador added, referring to the seismic alarm system that warned about the quake seconds before it happened. Many Acapulco residents slept outside overnight, as more than 150 aftershocks continued to rattle the hills. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7 and was centered 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) northeast of Acapulco. The tremor caused landslides, but major highways were open. The Acapulco airport had suspended operations, but the company operating it said it planned to resume normal operations by midday. Rumors of a possible tsunami caused panic in some low-lying neighborhoods immediately after the earthquake, driving residents to higher ground, but an alert was never issued and no change in the sea level was nrecorded.
