Several Western nations moved to wrap up evacuation operations from Afghanistan, while the Taliban moved to further limit access to Kabul’s airport in a move that came a day after the U.S. said it carried out a successful drone strike against ISIS-K. The U.S. strike had targeted the group believed to be involved in the recent deadly attack near the capital’s airport. The stepped up efforts by the Taliban, reported by The Associated Press, came two days after a suicide bombing near the facility. That attack killed 13 American service members and at least 75 Afghan citizens. The developments promised to further complicate evacuation hopes for thousands of Afghan nationals scrambling to flee the country as many nations wind down their operations before an Aug. 31 deadline for foreign troops to leave the country. The U.K.’s final evacuation flight of civilians took place Saturday and some of the 1,000 troops deployed in the country also began to leave. Germany, meanwhile, concluded its military operation to relocate people from the nation, and vowed to find alternate routes for others looking to leave, Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said at a ceremony late Friday at Wunstorf air base. The White House tweeted Saturday that another 6,800 people had been evacuated from Kabul over the latest 24-hour period. That brought the total to some 111,900 since the operation began on Aug. 14, it said.
