Speaking at a health care event in San Francisco, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi voiced concern for the fate of women and girls in Afghanistan following the fall of the Afghan government and takeover by the Taliban. "Quite frankly, I think some of the support for our presence in Afghanistan across the country sprang from the interest of the American people, of the fate of women and girls in Afghanistan," Pelosi said. Pelosi also took a "wait and see attitude" toward the governance of the Taliban. "We'll see where it goes from there. But people ask me, do you trust them when they say we're not going to change, we're not going to hurt women and the rest? We'll see, but we can't take that chance." Finally, Pelosi expressed hope that the U.S. would welcome Afghan refugees and took a swipe at the Trump administration for its executive order banning travel to the U.S. from several mostly Muslim countries, known as the "Muslim ban." "Well, that was a direct hit on the people who helped us. And therefore the diplomats and military and all came forward and said, 'We have to we have to get rid of the Muslim ban because that hits the people who helped us so much in Iraq and Afghanistan.'"
