Smoke from wildfires covered the north-east Russian Yakutia Republic on Thursday, with residents of the state capital Yaktusk complaining of health problems. The vast region in north-eastern Siberia has been worst affected by the fires this year. Meanwhile, wildfires in California are threatening rural towns and ranchland while the West sees a continuing bout of dangerously hot, dry weather.
