The Dixie Fire in far Northern California has consumed about 565 square miles (1,464 square kilometers), an area larger than the size of Los Angeles. Officials had not yet assessed the number of destroyed buildings, but Plumas County Sheriff Todd Johns estimated on Thursday that “well over" 100 homes had burned in and near the town. “My heart is crushed by what has occurred there,” said Johns, a lifelong Greenville resident. The blaze is the state's largest current wildfire. The cause was under investigation, but Pacific Gas & Electric has said it may have been sparked when a tree fell on one of the utility's power lines. Johns urged residents who receive a warning to be ready to evacuate quickly. "You should make preparations and be ready to move at a moment's notice," he said. "This fire making tremendous runs. And it is sometimes very difficult to try to get yourself prepped and out of the way before the fire actually gets there." As hot, bone-dry, gusty weather hit California this week, the Dixie Fire raged through Greenville, a Gold Rush-era Sierra Nevada community of about 1,000, incinerating much of the downtown that included wooden buildings more than a century old. The winds were expected to calm and change direction heading into the weekend.
