Illinois Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of only two Republicans sitting on the committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection became emotional Tuesday, on the opening day of hearings into the Capitol riot. Speaking directly to the Metropolitan Police and Capitol Police officers testifying before him, Kinzinger told them, "You guys may like individually feel a little broken... But you guys won. You guys held." "You know, democracies are not defined by our bad days. We're defined by how we come back from bad days," the Illinois Republican added. Kinzinger also took on his own party, which he said has treated the Jan. 6 investigation "as just another partisan fight." "It's toxic and it's a disservice to the officers and their families, to the staff and the employees on the Capitol complex, to the American people who deserve the truth," he said. Shortly after the insurrection, almost every Republican denounced the violent mob - and some criticized Trump himself, who told his supporters to “fight like hell” to overturn his defeat. But partisan tensions on Capitol Hill have only worsened since the insurrection, with many Republicans now playing down, or outright denying, the violence that occurred and denouncing the Democratic-led investigation as politically motivated. Democrats are hoping to win public support for the probe by reminding people how brutal it was, and how the law enforcement officers who were sworn to protect the Capitol suffered serious injuries at the hands of the rioters. "I'm here to investigate January 6th, not in spite of my membership in the Republican Party, but because of it. Not to win a political fight, but to learn the facts and defend our democracy," Kinzinger said.
