Rescue and security operations continued in the village of Pepinster, Belgium, on Saturday, as waters began to recede from some of the worst-hit areas in western Europe's unprecedented floods. The Vesdre River spilled over its banks and sent water churning through the streets of Pepinster, near Liege, on Friday. The death toll from disastrous flooding in western Europe rose above 150 on Saturday as rescue workers toiled to clear up the devastation and prevent further damage. Belgium's national crisis center put the confirmed death toll in that country at 24 and said it expects the number to rise.
