Climate action needs to be stepped up in light of devastating flooding in Germany and Belgium, as well as a persistent heatwave in Scandinavia, a World Meteorological Organization spokesperson insisted Friday. Speaking at a news conference in Geneva, Clare Nullis said that while Europe was prepared "on the whole," it was difficult to cope with extreme events such as the recent "two months' worth of rainfall in two days." Flash flooding in Germany and Belgium has killed at least 120 people in the past week. Many climate scientists have said the link to global warming is unmistakable. "We need to step up the level of ambition; we're not doing nearly enough to stay within the targets of the Paris Agreement and keep temperatures below 2 degrees Celsius," said Nullis. Nullis also said there had been unusually warm weather in parts of Scandinavia. Kouvola Anjala, in southern Finland, had seen temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) for 27 consecutive days, she said. "This is Finland, you know, it's not Spain, it's not North Africa," Nullis remarked. The weather conditions come as the European Union prepares drastic plans costing billions of euros to contain climate change.
