A few hundred protesters chanting "liberty" marched through eastern Paris on Wednesday, confronting riot police who fired tear gas to try to disperse the advancing crowd. Protesters and police kicked the tear gas canisters at each other, and cyclists calmly weaved through the crowd. Earlier in the week, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that vaccination would be obligatory for all health care workers by Sept. 15 and held out the possibility of extending the requirement to other parts of the population. Macron also mandated special COVID-19 passes for anyone who wants to go to a restaurant, shopping mall or hospital or get on a train or plane. To get a pass, people must have proof they're fully vaccinated, a fresh negative virus test, or proof they recently recovered from the virus. Even as France celebrated its national Bastille Day holiday on Wednesday, some cafe owners, hospital workers and parents were pushing back against Macron’s decision. The delta variant is driving France's virus infections back up again, just as the country kicked off summer vacation season after a long-awaited reopening process. Some 41 % of the French population has been fully vaccinated, though the pace of vaccinations had waned as summer approached. Many doctors and scientists, meanwhile, are urging tougher measures to contain the coronavirus. France has lost more than 111,000 lives to the pandemic.
