At Least 29 Dead in Philippine Military Plane Crash

At least 29 people died when a Philippine military plane crashed on landing Sunday in the south of the country. The C-130 aircraft crashed at around 11:30 a.m. local time as it tried to land at Jolo Airport in Sulu, according to a military statement. Fifty personnel have been hospitalized, while 17 remain unaccounted for, authorities said. Soldiers on the plane included new privates of the Philippine army who were en route to their deployment to end terrorism in Sulu, the military said. “Per eyewitnesses, a number of soldiers were seen jumping out of the aircraft before it hit the ground sparing them from from the explosion caused by the crash,” according to the statement. There were three pilots and five crew members, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said earlier.
