Demonstrators rallied in the streets of Rio de Janeiro on Saturday calling for the resignation of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Activists critical of Bolsonaro's handling of the coronavirus pandemic had called for a nationwide protest across 300 Brazilian cities. The demonstrations were also against his economic policies they say harm the interests of the poor and working class. On Friday, the official COVID-19 death toll in Brazil was about to hit 500,000, the second highest in the world behind the United States. Official data showed some 2,000 COVID-19 deaths per day in Brazil in the past week, representing one-fifth the global total. Only 11% of Brazil’s population is fully vaccinated.
