A century ago this week, the wealthiest Black community in the U.S. was burned to the ground. The Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was a thriving community of Black entrepreneurs and businesses. The town, founded by the descendants of slaves, earned a reputation as 'Black Wall Street.' On May 31, 1921, a white mob perpetrated one of the worst race massacres in U.S. history. Countless Black people were killed and 1,000 homes and businesses were looted and set on fire.
