President Joe Biden marks Memorial Day by reminding Americans that not all are called to "make the ultimate sacrifice," but we are all called to make our nation "free and fair." "May we now dedicate our souls that our work may prove worthy of the blood of our fallen," said Biden. "For this work, the work of democracy is the work of our time and for all time." His comments came during a speech at Arlington National Cemetery to honor America’s war dead. Before his speech, the president was joined by first lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and second gentleman Doug Emhoff in a somber wreath ceremony at the Virginia cemetery's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is dedicated to the fallen U.S. service members whose remains have not been identified. On Sunday, Biden addressed a crowd of Gold Star military families and other veterans in a ceremony at War Memorial Plaza in New Castle, Delaware. Earlier in the day, he and other family members attended a memorial Mass for his son Beau Biden, a veteran who died of brain cancer six years ago to the day. On Monday, Biden mentioned Beau in his comments about military service. Last year, Biden, then a presidential candidate, chose Memorial Day to make his first public appearance in the two months after the coronavirus pandemic closed down the nation.
