Taiwan's Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) raised the COVID-19 alert level for the cities of Taipei and New Taipei from Level 2 to Level 3 on Saturday, as the cities struggle to contain surging domestic infections. The new alert will be effective from May 15 through to May 28, Taiwan Premier Su Tseng-chang announced. Taiwan Health Minister Chen Shih-chung said the new restrictions are intended to trap the virus in "these hot zones" and curb its spread. A Level 3 alert means people are now required to wear masks at all times when they leave their homes.
