Mexico City Rescuers Use Crane to Lower Dangling Subway Car From Fallen Overpass

Rescue efforts continued early Tuesday after an elevated section of Mexico City's metro collapsed and sent a subway car plunging toward a busy boulevard. At least 23 people died and about 70 were injured, city officials said. Rescuers searched a carriage left dangling from the overpass for anyone who might be trapped. Those efforts were suspended, however, because of safety concerns. A crane was brought in to help shore the carriage up. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said she didn't know if the people possibly trapped inside the car were alive. The overpass was about five meters (16 feet) above the road in the borough of Tlahuac, but the train ran above a concrete median strip, which apparently lessened the casualties among motorists on the road below.
