President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden traveled Monday to coastal Virginia to promote his plans to increase spending on education and children, part of his $1.8 trillion families proposal announced last week. After stopping at an elementary school in the morning, the first couple visited Tidewater Community College. Biden's education initiatives include money for programs like universal pre-K, tuition-free community college for two years and safe re-opening of schools, among other things. The issue of education funding is of personal importance to the Bidens. The first lady is an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria. But there is uncertainty about Biden getting an ambitious set of spending programs through narrow Democratic majorities in Congress. Together, the two spending plans have a combined cost of about $4 trillion and many Republicans have signaled opposition to the proposals and their costs. Biden is proposing paying for the initiatives through tax increases on the wealthiest Americans and corporations. "I like to ask the question, do we want to give the wealthiest people in America another tax cut? Or do you want to give every high school graduate the ability to earn a community college degree on their way to good paying jobs or on the way to four years of school in industries of the future," Biden said. "I don't want to punish anybody, but everybody should chip in. Everybody should pay something," he added.
