George Floyd Square in Minneapolis erupts in cheers after Chauvin guilty verdict

Crowds gathered on April 20 near the spot where George Floyd was killed to celebrate the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Across America, communities were bracing for Chauvin to be acquitted of Floyd’s murder, for the inevitable protests that would follow, for the strife and conflict and destruction of last year to be replayed this spring. Windows were boarded up, reinforcements were called and state of emergencies declared. But as the guilty verdicts on all three counts of murder and manslaughter were announced to the crowd in Minneapolis, there were instead tears of joy, hugs and cheers.
