The global toll of confirmed deaths from COVID-19 surpassed 3 million on Saturday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

By the numbers: The U.S. has seen more deaths (566,238) than any other country, followed by Brazil (368,749) and Mexico (211,693).

  • The global death toll hit 2 million in January.
  • There were approximately 12,900 daily deaths around the world associated with the coronavirus reported on Friday.

Reality check: "The true death toll from COVID-19 will never be known with any precision," Axios' Dave Lawler writes.

  • The actual number is believed to be higher due to possible data concealment and cases that were overlooked in 2019, AP reports.

The big picture: "The number of lives lost, as compiled by Johns Hopkins University, is about equal to the population of Kyiv, Ukraine; Caracas, Venezuela; or metropolitan Lisbon, Portugal. It is bigger than Chicago (2.7 million) and equivalent to Philadelphia and Dallas combined," AP adds.
