President Joe Biden said he spoke Tuesday with Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray about the mass shooting Monday in Boulder, Colorado that killed ten people. He noted that the "investigation is still ongoing" and said his "heart goes out to the families of the victims and the survivors" of the shooting, and he again commended the "heroic actions" of Officer Eric Talley, who was killed after being the first police officer to arrive on scene. Biden made the comments in remarks following a tour of the new, state-of-the-art Radiation Oncology Department at the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute at Ohio State University, He was at the cancer center to highlight his American Rescue Plan and pledge that the $1.9 trillion rescue package would build on the promise of the Affordable Care Act, the hallmark legislation of Barack Obama's presidency that became law 11 years ago. Biden's COVID-19 relief law pumps up “Obamacare” premium subsidies to address longstanding problems of affordability, particularly for people with middle-class incomes. “We have a duty not just to protect it, but to make it better and keep becoming a nation where health care is a right for all, not a privilege for a few,” Biden said. The president also touted the progress on vaccinations since he took office, saying that because of the American Rescue Plan, the U.S. has been able to more rapidly acquire vaccines and now, by the end of May, the nation will have roughly 600 million doses of coronavirus vaccines, "enough for every American." Biden's speech in the capital of a political battleground state is part of a mini-blitz by the White House to highlight the relief package.
