A group of House Democrats are seeking to boost public awareness of the upcoming #STOPASIANHATE virtual action day on March 26 in response to last week's mass shooting in Atlanta. The lawmakers, including several on the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, held a briefing to highlight this Friday's event. "We are asking everybody across this nation to take some kind of virtual action, a tweet, a post, an in-person event that's live streamed or a virtual event using the hashtag #STOPASIANHATE," said Rep. Judy Chu of California, who also chairs the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). The group also pushed for legislation, introduced by Rep. Grace Meng and Sen. Mazie Hirono in the House and Senate respectively, that would assign a point person at the Department of Justice to expedite the review of COVID-19-related hate crimes. It bill would also support state and local law enforcement agencies to respond to these hate crimes. "We need that now, particularly because of what happened during this pandemic, because of the way in which Asian Americans and Asian immigrants to this country have been stigmatized by the irresponsible use of language by the former President Trump," said Rep. Mark Takano. He also called out Trump's Republican allies in Congress. "It's continued to be used by many, many of his Republican members of Congress who enable him, who are complicit with him. And that also needs to stop," he said.
