The number of migrant children and families seeking to cross the southwest border of the U.S. has surged to levels not seen since before the pandemic. That's presenting a challenge for President Joe Biden as he works to undo the restrictive immigration policies of his predecessor. It's also raising concerns among Republicans who say the Biden administration is causing the problems by reversing the policies of the Trump administration. "When you are the president of the United States ... it's not enough to ignore the challenge. It's an abdication of your responsibility if you ignore the challenge," said Republican Rep. Liz Cheney. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said he wrote President Biden asking for a meeting about the situation at the U.S. southern border, but has yet to receive a response. Statistics released Wednesday by U.S. Customs and Border Protection show the number of children and families increasing by more than 100% between January and February. The number of kids crossing by themselves has risen 60% to more than 9,400, forcing the government to look for new places to hold them temporarily amid the pandemic. While some Republicans said the Biden administration is creating "disorder" at the border, Mexico stopped taking back a lot of families with young children, which means US border agents can't expel them even though the Biden administration permits it. The uptick in border crossings along the southern border began in the last few months of the Trump administration.
