President Joe Biden held a virtual meeting Monday with Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador in which they discussed migration, the coronavirus, and economic and national security issues. It was only the second virtual meeting Biden has held with a foreign leader since he assumed the presidency, following his talks last week with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Speaking from the White House's Roosevelt Room, Biden started the discussion recalling that of the 16 visits he made to Latin America as Vice President, four were to Mexico. López Obrador responded by emphasizing Mexico's warm ties with the United States. The Mexican president alluded to a rueful observation attributed to José de la Cruz Porfirio Díaz Mori, the Mexican general who served seven terms as the country's president, about the two countries' relationship: "Poor Mexico, so far from God, so close to the U.S." "I can now say 'It's wonderful for Mexico to be close to God and not so far from the United States'" López Obrador said. The two sides following the meeting issued a joint statement pledging greater cooperation on addressing migration, the coronavirus pandemic, and climate change. The Mexican government in a separate statement added the two sides also agreed to crack down on migrant trafficking.
