Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnel blasted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's proposal for a bipartisan commission to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, insisting it's not bipartisan at all. Speaking on the Senate floor Wednesday, McConnell said the January insurrection does require a "serious and thorough review of the specific institutions and security procedures within Congress that proved so insufficient." But he said any such probe should reflect the design of the 9/11 Commission that made sweeping recommendations in 2004 to prevent another terrorist attack like the ones in New York and Washington. "The 9/11 Commission was intentionally built to be bipartisan," McConnell said. "The 50-50 bipartisan split of the commissioners was a key feature. It both helped the effectiveness of the investigation itself and helped give the whole country confidence in its work and its recommendations." McConnelll said this time, however, Pelosi is proposing a commission that would be "partisan by design: Seven appointments for Democrats, just four for Republicans." "An inquiry with a hardwired partisan slant would never be legitimate in the eyes of the American people," he says.
