DACA recipient Vanessa Mejia and her mother, Connie, watched U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris take the oath of office Wednesday from their Oakland living room. Immigrant families and organizers in the Bay Area applauded Biden’s proposed immigration reform bill as unprecedented legislation that will give many people a chance to permanently remain in the country and build a future without fear of deportation. The bill counters the stringent and historic policies that came to define the Trump administration, which included restricting asylum, slashing refugee resettlement, doubling down on deportations and constructing a border wall.
