Oxford University coronavirus vaccine up to 90% effective
The University of Oxford announced Monday a COVID-19 vaccine it's developed with AstraZeneca is 70.4% effective in preventing people from developing symptoms.
Of note: The effectiveness of the vaccine increased to 90% among volunteers given half a dose, followed by a full one, the university noted in a statement. Pfizer and Moderna both reported earlier this month that their coronavirus vaccines had efficacy rates of about 95%.
What they're saying: "[W]e're hoping to supply 3 billion doses of the vaccine and make it available to people around the world by the end of next year," the university said in a statement, noting the vaccine can be stored at fridge temperature and "deployed quickly using existing infrastructure."
Today marks an important milestone in the fight against #COVID19. Interim data show the #OxfordVaccine is 70.4% effective, & tests on two dose regimens show that it could be 90%, moving us one step closer to supplying it at low cost around the world>> https://t.co/fnHnKSqftT pic.twitter.com/2KYXPxFNz1
